Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what brings you to therapy, your history, and what you're hoping to get out of our work together. You'll also get a chance to ask me anything. Think of it as a mutual interview — we're both figuring out if this is a good fit.

How long are sessions?

Individual sessions are 50 minutes. Couples and family sessions are 80 minutes. I occasionally offer extended individual sessions for EMDR or KAP work.

How often will we meet?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. As things progress, we may move to biweekly. The frequency really depends on what you need and what we're working on.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. As a licensed therapist (not a psychiatrist), I don't prescribe medication. If medication might be helpful, I can refer you to a psychiatrist or work alongside your prescribing doctor.

Do you offer virtual sessions?

Yes. I offer telehealth sessions for anyone located in California. Virtual sessions use a HIPAA-compliant video platform.

What's the difference between a therapist, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

A therapist (like me, an LMFT) provides talk therapy and uses various therapeutic modalities. A psychologist (PhD or PsyD) can do the same and also administer psychological testing. A psychiatrist (MD) primarily manages medication. Many people work with both a therapist and a psychiatrist.

How do I know if therapy is working?

Good question. It's not always a straight line. Some signs: you start noticing your patterns in real time, your relationships feel less reactive, you feel more like yourself. I also check in regularly about how you're experiencing our work together.

I've tried therapy before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?

Not all therapy is the same, and not all therapists are the right fit. Sometimes the approach wasn't right, sometimes the relationship wasn't there. I use modalities that go deeper than traditional talk therapy — IFS, Brainspotting, KAP — and I'm direct about what I see. That combination works for a lot of people who've felt stuck before.
